A half-century each by Natraj Behera and Arvind Singh went in vain as Odisha lost to host Bengal by 25 runs in their opening match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy East Zone One-day League at Kalyani (West Bengal) today. Chasing 221 for victory, Odisha were dismissed for 195 with 3.2 overs still to go.
After losing both the openers early, Odisha made a fight back thanks to a 68-run stand for the third wicket between Natraj Behera (77, 114b, 5x4, 2x6) and Govind Poddar (34). Though the fall of three wickets in space of two runs swung the match in favour of Bengal, another fine partnership worth 98 runs for the sixth wicket between Natraj and Arvind (50, 70b, 6x4) kept Odisha`s victory hope alive.
However, with the dismissal of Natraj at the team total of 186, Odisha made a meek surrender, losing the last five wickets for nine runs. Pacer Veerpratap Singh was the wrecker-in-chief of the Odisha batting line-up, scalping five wickets for 23 runs.
Earlier put into bat, Bengal rode on an unbeaten century by opener Shreevats Goswami (110, 145b, 10x4) to muster a competitive total of 220 for six. Pace spearhead Basant Mohanty was the most successful Odisha bowler, bagging three wickets for 46 runs.
